Importance of Pre-Employment Evaluations
When considering a job candidate, your agency is likely to face the challenge of knowing very little about the personality of the candidate you are about to hire. Questions such as will he or she get along with your team members? Will the candidate bring personality characteristics to the table that will increase his or her likelihood of becoming a successful law enforcement officer? Does your candidate possess the emotional fortitude and resilience to face the daily challenges and stressors that he or she will encounter as an officer on a daily basis? Other personality components, including a candidate's motivational factors, problem-solving and decision making style, conflict resolution and communication style will also be explored during our evaluation process.
Pre-Employment Suitability Screenings
Psychological screenings occur at the final stage of the hiring process. This type of evaluation is crucial, as it assesses a prospective hire’s personality factors, as they are relevant to their suitability for working in a position of public safety, and examines their current level of emotional stability and psychological functioning. This type of screening may be of particular use to agencies and organizations not related to public safety. The suitability interview does not address any information that would be covered under the American’s with Disability Act.
Promotional and/or Specialty Teams Screenings
Although many departments/organizations will only conduct an initial pre-employment screen on a newly hired candidate, other departments/organizations choose to implement an additional psychological evaluation for candidates being considered for internal promotions or for positions on specialty teams, including SWAT or Hostage Negotiation Teams. Requiring a supplemental evaluation maximizes the screening data for suitability and fitness, which departments may utilize in making important selection decisions for officers being considered for specialty teams.
